The French designer began his career at Roberto Cavalli, before replacing Christophe Decarnin as creative director at Balmain in 2011, when he was just 25. Rousteing’s designs have built him a strong following within Hollywood, with his glamorous dresses and embellished gowns drawing the attention of celebrities such as Rihanna, Beyonce and Kim Kardashian.
But the fashion star is adamant that he has no set strategy in mind when it comes to who he works with.
“I just dress people who I love and I never dress people that I don’t like. A lot of people say, ‘You dress famous people and it’s all about (being) famous.’ It’s not true,” he told WWD. “There are so many people who are famous, but there are few people that I dress, if you think about it. I just dress people that my heart belongs to and they are my friends.”
Among the stars Rousteing counts as friends is Cindy Crawford, who he cast in his campaign for spring ’16, alongside other key ’90s supermodels Naomi Campbell and Claudia Schiffer. Cindy, 50, also presented the designer with an Icon honour at the Marie Claire Image Maker Awards on Tuesday night (10Jan17) in Los Angeles, a moment he cites as being a dream come true.
“Cindy was my dream when I was a kid. You know when you dream of the model that’s going to give you the feeling of, ‘What is fashion?’ We shot our campaign two years ago with her and Steven Klein. She was my dream and today she is my friend.”
Rousteing, now 31, then added that travelling to Los Angeles has been a significant milestone for him, even though he hails from fashionable Paris. And he hinted that he may be returning to the city again shortly.
“Balmain is going to be really, really close to L.A. in a few months for so many reasons. So… I can’t tell you more,” he said.
